We have all heard people say that communication is key.
As cliche as it may sound, it is true. Communication is important in every aspect of life and business is no exception. And with a remote team? It’s vital.
Communicating effectively with a remote team has always been one of the biggest challenges of moving to an office-less culture of work.
As a remote team member, you spend a large portion of your time communicating to ensure the success of your project. You require the cooperation of others to make the decisions and complete the tasks. You must communicate so others clearly understand their role in the project and complete their areas of responsibility in a timely fashion. Your objective is to get action from others.
A lot of the nuance of face to face conversations can be lost over written communication.
One of the biggest pitfalls of written communication is its susceptibility to being misinterpreted or misunderstood. Without visual and verbal cues like facial expression, body language, intonation, and other signals we use to determine to mean, messages can sometimes come across as angry, or rude when they weren’t meant to be.
That is why it is worth going the extra mile to review each message before sending it off, maybe writing a little more than you might be inclined to over-communicating just to make sure your meaning is as clear as possible.
How does your remote team communicate?
